International Tourism Development (ITD_HM)

Description:

Walk around a major city and tourists will be riding the sightseeing buses, visiting the sites, enjoying the local amenities, shopping, eating out in restaurants and staying in hotels. You will do the same when visiting overseas. Tourism has become an important industry as people find new ways of enjoying their disposable income in times of increasing prosperity.

Governments and businesses have also recognized the importance of tourism as a source of income and promote their countries, regions and towns as attractive places to visit whether it be for a weekend cultural break, a wedding and honeymoon in the sunshine or place to spend a gap year.

Tourism has grown rapidly but within the market there are numerous sub-markets and these have developed to accommodate the changing needs of tourists. Adventure tourism, eco-tourism, short breaks, working holidays, activity vacations and special interest trips are some of the niche tourism that is available. However tourism comes at a cost and the impact of tourism generates concerns about the environmental impact that the industry has. The economic benefits are weighed against issues such as sustainability, global warming and the environmental damage caused by tourism.

To achieve this unit you must:

  • Understand how the global tourism industry has developed
  • Know tourists' needs and their motivations to travel
  • Know the impact of tourism development
