St Patrick’s law student receives Vice Chancellor Scholarship Award

08/05/2015

Arlene Scott, who is studying law at St Patrick’s, has been awarded with the Vice Chancellor Scholarship Award from the University of East London (UEL). The scholarship rewards students who have achieved academic excellence and are committed to UEL's values. It is the highest scholarship that the university provides, with £27,000 to cover the tuition fee for her first year.

Arlene has expressed that this may not have been possible without the hard work and support of her lecturers. She said: “Due to your never ending support and encouragement with my studies, application to university, and my subsequent interest to apply for a scholarship, I have won the Vice Chancellor's scholarship award.”

In order to qualify, she had to demonstrate her commitment to the community. Arlene put forward her social enterprise, Young People’s Project, an advocate service for people from disadvantaged backgrounds who have been affected by domestic violence.

The project has collaborated with the London Borough of Lewisham to work with young people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds between the ages of 14 and 16, educating them on the law. It provides visits to the magistrate’s court and the Old Bailey, allowing young people to sit in on various cases to improve their understanding of the law system. Magistrates were so impressed with the initiative that they have offered to come and talk with the young people in the future.

Arlene is expected to graduate from St Patrick’s this July with a full HND in Law, starting her degree in Law at UEL in September 2015. She would like to thank St Patrick’s and all of her lecturers, Stephen Airey, Kareesha Maitaram, Uriah Bajela, Christopher Ojoko, and Margarita Dimitrova for their support throughout the course.

We congratulate Arlene on her achievement and wish her the best in all her aspirations.
