Prof Daniel Khan OBE, Principal of St Patrick’s College, was guest speaker at the Launch event of the lnstitute of Carbon Accountants and Traders (ICAT), which took place on 1 October at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
The ICAT is a newly established professional institute. It offers professional recognition for practical carbon accountants and traders, and a recognised qualification and career pathway for those seeking professional recognition or career progression in this field. 1st October was also the date when the Companies Act 2006 (Strategic Report & Directors’ Report Regulations 2013) came into force. All UK quoted companies are now required to report on their greenhouse gas emissions as part of their annual Directors’ Report.
In his speech, Prof Khan said that the Accounting profession should be responding to society’s increasing concern about climate change, and discussed the role that accounting can play in determining how we deal with climate change. The financial accounting of carbon should position the profession to be fully involved at the heart of this important debate.
